Two ways to search
Without letters, the finder searches all 172,747 words in the list and returns those that match your filters, in alphabetical order. This replaces our old one-page lists such as "words starting with B" or "words ending in X", which could only show a small sample. For example, set "Starts with" to PRE, "Ends with" to ION and length to 10 to see words such as PRECAUTION, PREDICTION and PREVENTION.
With letters, it works like the unscrambler: only words you can make from your tiles are shown, and each one shows its tile score.
Ideas for searches
- Words ending in -ING or -ED to find hooks and inflections.
- Words containing Q, X, Z or J for high-scoring plays; see also our Q, X and Z word lists.
- Five-letter words starting with a particular letter for Wordle practice; the 5-letter words page lists them all.
- Words of a set length with a known start, for crossword answers. If you know letters in the middle too, the crossword pattern finder is quicker.
To keep the page fast, the finder shows up to 1,000 results at a time. If you hit the limit, add another filter.
Sharing a search
You can link straight to a search by adding settings to the address, for example /word-finder.html?starts=qu&length=5. Links from older PuzleFix pages work this way.
Frequently asked questions
Which dictionary does PuzleFix use?
The ENABLE word list, a public-domain list of about 172,800 English words compiled for word games. We removed 73 offensive slurs. ENABLE is not an official tournament dictionary, so a few words allowed in your game may be missing and a few listed here may not be allowed.
Why do results stop at 1,000?
Very broad searches, such as every word starting with S, return thousands of words. Showing them all would make the page slow, so add a length or ending to narrow it down.
