How to enter a pattern
Type one character for each square in the answer. Use the letter where you know it, and ? (or a full stop) where you do not. The pattern ?A?E means a four-letter word with A second and E last, matching words such as BAKE, CAKE, GATE and LANE. The pattern C??T matches CART, CHAT, COAT and COST, among others.
If crossing answers have ruled letters out, add them to the exclude box. Excluded letters are only checked in the gaps, not in squares you have already filled.
From pattern to answer
A pattern finder gives you the possible words; the clue tells you which one is right. Read the clue for its definition, which is usually at the start or the end. In cryptic crosswords, look for signals of wordplay such as anagram indicators ("mixed", "broken", "wild") or hidden words ("in", "some", "part of"). When the clue points to an anagram, the anagram solver can rearrange the letters for you.
Limits
The list contains single words only, so multi-word answers, phrases, proper nouns and abbreviations will not appear. For a multi-word answer, search each word separately using the letter counts given in the clue, such as (4,5). Plurals and verb forms are included, which helps when an answer ends in S, ED or ING.
Frequently asked questions
Can it solve the clue itself?
No. It lists words that fit the letters you know. You still need the clue to choose between them.
Does it include names and places?
No. The ENABLE list leaves out proper nouns, so answers such as names, places and brands will not appear.
