Scrabble Strategy

A filled-out strategy guide for stronger Scrabble-style play.

1. Manage your rack

Keep a balanced mix of vowels and consonants. A rack full of one type limits your options, even if it contains high-value tiles.

2. Protect premium squares

Do not leave easy access to triple-word and double-word squares unless your score is strong enough to justify the risk.

3. Learn short words

Short legal words are the engine of high scores because they create parallel plays and let you score in more than one direction.

4. Use high-value tiles carefully

J, Q, X and Z can score heavily, but only when placed with multiplier control. Avoid holding them for too long.

5. Plan the endgame

Track dangerous tiles near the end. Clearing your rack first can create a major swing if your opponent is left with heavy letters.
